Peregrine Photo by Gabe Cenker at Space Coast Birding Festival

From Jennifer Cenker, Gabe's mom:

My son Gabe Cenker, age 9 Rockledge,FL spotted this Peregrine Falcon sitting on the sticks on the road you drive on before you turn into the Black Point Wildlife Drive while we were enjoying the Beginning Birding Field Trip this morning.  The Peregrine Falcon is his favorite thing on the planet and was giddy beyond words to finally catch one perching instead of flying way up high.

Sorry it is a bit blurry but you can definitely see the moustache markings and he was a beauty in the binoculars!

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work they are doing for this festival - my son Gabe is the birder in the family and he is having an absolute blast - he saved up and paid for his class he is attending tomorrow and is thrilled to be surrounded by other bird nerds :-)

Paul Baicich Keynote: 10 Things You Can Do for Birds

Crops
Paul Baicich, in his Keynote presentation this evening at the 15th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, articulated 10 things we can do to help birds. These are my favorite four:

1. Have a bird friendly back yard. Imagine if all the millions of birders in the USA had a bird-friendly backyard.

2. Buy and promote the Migratory Bird Stamp.

3. Attend birding festivals. They bring new people into birding and cultivate interest.

4. Take a child or adult out birding and introduce them to the wonders of birds!

Birding Checklist from North Brevard Hotspots Field Trip 01-25-2012

This trip saw more than 87 species of birds, although each person did not necessarily see all 87 species. Some were fairly elusive, even with binoculars and scopes, or they only appeared long enough for a couple of people to see them.

These photos are of the checklist from one of the birders on the trip. Click on the photos to enlarge.

Richard Crossley Keynote Informs and Inspires Birders

Img_0141
Richard Crossley packed the house Wednesday evening with an inspiring talk about how he developed as a birder and how he came to break the mold with bird guide design.

Img_0142
Crossley's comparisons of the British approach to birding with that of Americans was entirely enlightening and brought into focus the important work of James Currie and Birding Adventures TV. James Currie will be presenting the Friday evening Keynote. Be sure to attend.

The Crossley ID Guide was on display and for sale outside the BCC Auditorium. Many birders turned out to support Crossley's fine work.

After his Keynote presentation, Crossley autographed copies of his guide and engaged with birders at the Space Coast Birding Festival.
